Who would have thought? I hope this natural disaster doesn’t affect my flights in any way. I don’t fly until Monday, Romania to Bulgaria.
Anyone who knows me closely knows I love to study volcanoes and love photos of volcanoes. What immense power in an eruption.
What is up with all these earth disasters? Little Miracles has a family from Wales that cannot leave UK to go adopt their child due to this volcano. Hopefully this is just very temporary.
As most of the European airspace are totally shut down Paris-based Le Parisien reports the volcano eruptions in Iceland, that has created the ash clouds shutting most of the European airspace and canceling flights in and out of Europe, may last weeks.
The eruption of the Icelandic volcano has grown intensity. A thick layer of ash 6,000 meters high now extends over several thousand acres to the east of the island. After the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands have closed their airspace.
“The duration of an eruption in Iceland is highly variable. This can range from several days to more than a year. However, if we judge by the intensity of it, it could last long,” Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, a professor of Icelandic geophysics, tells AFP.
“An eruption about a century ago has lasted a whole year, so it can be as long as that,” said Thorsteinn Jonsson, forecaster at the Meteorological Institute of Iceland. “It can also calm down in two or three weeks, as was the case with other eruptions.
Ash clouds have affected many countries nearing to the Russian airspace. Russian premier minister Vladimir Putin found it prudent to postpone his trip to the northern city of Murmansk.
Interestingly Iceland itself is not very much affected. The winds blow the ash clouds toward Europe and now southward. Experts say the situation may improve this weekend. UK and Ireland will be the most affected.
According to Romandie.com the volcano beneath the glacier Eyjafjallajökull is ten times more active than a nearby one erupted last month. The cloud of ash has plunged some areas of the south coast of the island in darkness.
You best not be stuck there~ How horrible. What is up with these natural disasters of late? We had a meteor come crashing here in Wisconsin! A friend of a friend of mine was in his hot tub, and actually saw it flying by! Too close for comfort. Hoping you will be able to get to Bulgaria. Will be reading up on your blog to see what happens. Praying you will be able to get on your flight and onto Bulgaria!
