I used to have a boss that would take an afternoon nap, regardless of what was happening in her office. She operated the office in her home with a secretary. The phones would go off around noon and she would leave them off until she was rested fully. She could out power-nap anyone!

Studies show that 20 minutes of sleep in the afternoon provides more rest than 20 minutes more sleep in the morning (though the last two hours of morning sleep have special benefits of their own). The body seems to be designed for this, as most people’s bodies naturally become more tired in the afternoon, about 8 hours after we wake up.

I’ve noticed as I travel I need these power naps. All countries except US have afternoon naptime!   Everyone knows about the Latin American siesta!  Where ever I go people suggest that I “rest” or nap in the afternoon, all the while I’m still ready to function at full speed.  Why are we such a work driven society? Do we want to drive ourselves into an early grave? Napping has been proven to decrease the risk of heart disease.

In a recent study, researchers at NASA showed that a 30-minute power nap increased cognitive faculties by approximately 40 percent!

Why Companies Should Insist That Employees Take Naps
If encouraging employees to take a half-hour nap means they can be two or three times as productive over the subsequent three hours — and far more emotionally resilient — the value is crystal clear. It’s a win-win and a great investment.
